Fire on the earth again!
Desert diary from
Sunday, January 25, 2004
There are a lot of benefits living around a crazy
philosopher-warrior-poet-soul-friend like David. One of the benefits
that I appreciate is his ability to make great coffee, but another is
his constant contemplation of who Jesus is and how he has impacted our
world. Last week I was inspired by some conversations we were having. It
spurred me to put together a simple song, with the following lyrics:
-Start of Song-
There’s a stirring in my heart, its been a cold long time
It’s been ages and ages of winter
But there’s a rumor in the east, that they’ve seen a great light,
A star has come, and split the heavens
And There’s a rumor in the west, that deep down in the wilds,
They’ve sighted the great lion on the move
Can this really be true, the glory left so long ago?
Can I really dare, to hope again?
The prophets they’ve been silent, the temple it’s been dark
Can I really dare, to dream again?
There’s been grumblings in the earth (my heart), is something ‘bout to
happen?
Something that’s not happened before
A lame man is walking, a blind man can see, a deaf man can hear-what’s
going on?
(The wheel is broken)
Holy fire, holy fire
Is there fire on the earth once more?
Can this really be true, has the glory returned, to dwell in the midst,
of man again
The rumors are true
His glory is among us
The great king of earth and heaven has returned
(The ageless wheel of time and space has been broken)
-End of Song-
It must have been amazing to live on the earth during the time of the
Ark when God, the creator of the universe physically dwelt on the earth
in the Holy of Holies. Then the heart-ache true God-seekers must have
felt when the temple was destroyed. They must have longed desperately
for his return, yearning for His return. Hundreds of years went by with
very little word from God. Had all hope been lost?
Then, when it seemed nothing new would every happen on the earth again,
the wheel was broken and Christ was born. Everything changed in an
instant. Time and space was split. Oh! The excitement that a God-seeker
like Anna in the temple and the wise men must have felt. The
anticipation must have grown. The rumors of his healings and miracles –
could people dare to hope that the fire was on the earth again! Had God
truly come to dwell among them again?!?
My spirit leaps when I think about this! We can tap into this excitement
by looking back and bringing it forward to the present day. Christ has
changed our world forever! He has restored that which was lost. And the
excitement of that first coming foretells of another coming that my
heart yearns for. There is fire on the earth once more!
