Come the rains
Desert diary from Saturday, August 13, 2005

Thursday morning there were a series of thunderstorms that moved through the Chaparral area. They were beautiful and inspiring. I was able to leave the air-conditioner in my room off all day as I worked so I was able to hear each front roll in. It would start as a barely audible rumble in the distance, then move in and become so loud it would that it would chatter your teeth.

Since I’ve lived out in the desert now, I’ve noticed natural things like the rain much more than when I lived in the suburbs. I’ve noticed that there is always a cool reversing, swirling of the wind just before a shower comes. It usually blows dust and leaves around and whips the trees. Deanna noticed that the ten to twenty humming birds that like to hang around the feeders will evacuate a few minutes before the rains come. I’ve noticed that you can also smell the rain coming about five minutes or more before it arrives.
